Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government has transferred long-range Scud missiles to the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah in a move that threatens to alter the Middle East’s military balance, Israeli and U.S. officials alleged.

Israeli President Simon Peres publicly charged Syria on Tuesday with transferring Scud missiles to Hezbollah’s forces inside Lebanon. Rumors of the arms transfer have been swirling around Jerusalem and Washington for more than a week, but Israeli and U.S. officials had previously refused to confirm the reports.
